I have been highly impressed by the two Civil War reenactments I’ve seen this year, particularly with the re-enactors themselves. They took their roles seriously and strove to make their portrayals as realistic as possible. As evidenced in the two photographs below, after the front line had advanced (along with the limelight), the dead and wounded continued acting. Their care to tell the whole story was impressive. In the first photograph a clergyman administers last rites to a dying soldier. This was not an action packed scene but it spoke volumes. What a powerful image and to remember that such events really happened is humbling. I was glad the re-enactors included it in their presentation. Similarly, in another poignant encounter, I saw a wounded Confederate officer grimace in pain while looking upon his lost comrade in grief. This also occurred long after the Union troops had passed. I was really struck by the emotion depicted the portrayal. As a photographer I love seeing moments like these and sincerely wish I could see more.

4 May 2011Hi Scott,
Your comments were most interesting and appropiate and the photographs were quite good.
I have only seen re-enactors down at the Fort Pitt Museum which was a little different than battlefield scenes.
Hope all is well in Tulsa.
Love, A Nancy

4 May 2011Hi,
Your pictures are great, I have never seen an reenactment, but feel it would be really moving to watch. Keep up the good work and enjoy.

4 May 2011Thanks for the comments. This year is the Civil War Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) and there are special events being held all over the country. You should look into going to Gettysburg. This year’s reenactment, as always, will be held July 1, 2 and 3, the actual days of the battle. Of course going anytime is still worthwhile.
