A few weeks ago Mpix came to Tulsa for a three-day photography conference. I was only able to go one day but it turned out to be very profitable. For the morning session I attended a landscape seminar, which was terrific. Peter “Moose” Tellone came all the way from California to share his vision and expertise with us. In the afternoon I went to another fruitful class to learn about studio lighting. Lowry Wilson taught. From Mississippi, he’s an exceptional photographer and teacher as well. Having a chance to learn so much in so little time by two experts for free was phenomenal.
All of the images below are from the studio lighting class. The first three photographs are of Miranda and were made using the strobes. The opportunity for each student to employ the lighting setup, with our own cameras, was extremely helpful and fun. My captures weren’t perfect and all the images below could have been better but the experience was great. I gained a new appreciation for the subtle things that make or break a successful portrait. The second three, they are of Bree, were shot between takes. In other word, while someone else was taking their turn with the strobes, I shot in very dim ambient light. ISO 3200 was needed. In post, I attempted to use the resulting grainy look to my advantage.
